Rhyming Paper Chains

We are still loving reading Monkey Puzzle, and can remember a lot of the words now. We've noticed that it is written in rhyme and enjoy listening out for and saying the rhyming words. So, we played a rhyming pairs game in small groups, using our phonics to sound out and blend the words, and then wrote our own rhyming words to make paper chain vines for our jungle corner! I wonder what rhyming words you can think of.

Composition Time!

Today we continued our recorder compositions to include a harmony line. We have also started to practise our original compositions.

Advert Fun!

We have been looking at a range of adverts and thinking of questions we want to answer about these adverts. We thought about the images, characters, purpose and use of music in advertisements.

Durham University-The Groovy Greeks

Last week we had some very special visitors from Durham University. We took part in a drama activity where we created our own Greek theatre in our classroom. We learnt all about the death room!

We then made a sculpture to present to the gods. We made a sculpture of our body parts we need fixing.

We also had the chance to see real objects from Ancient Greece.

Evolution and inheritance !

Y6 have been learning about the theory of evolution as part of their new science topic. We have looked recently at how similar and different we are from one another. In order to investigate further we designed a series of experiments in which we could compare a range of measurements such as : height , foot  and arm length and circumference of our heads.
From this data we calculated the mean, median , mode and range and were able to choose a way to best represent our information in graph form.

Chloe and Lauren have been working very hard together. Miss Storey is so proud!

Traditional Tales

Traditional Tales

This week in Literacy we have been really creative and have been writing our own traditional tales. Before we have started writing our Traditional tales we have planned them in great detail.

Here is Jacks plan, Jack has created his own traditional tale and called it ‘The Three Little Rabbits’.

Star of the Week - 26.1.15

Star of the Week

The star of the week is…Lee-Jay! Congratulations to Lee- Jay for having a fantastic attitude to school life!

The Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs

This week in literacy Frazer has completed some brilliant work. We have been identifying main events and characters in traditional tales. Please look at what Frazer has completed with little support.

WOW!!!

The star of the week is…Katy! Congratulations to Katy for always being so helpful and kind to others.

Map Work

We started looking at the location of Greece and the surrounding countries. We used an atlas to locate a range of countries and their capital cities.

A Curious Thing Happened...!

When we came into school on Tuesday, we found a very sad Curious George. He had lost his banana and needed help to find it! Together, we followed the clues around the school, sometimes having to work out Fred-talk words like 'c-a-n' and 'h-e-l-p', and eventually found it in Mrs Glister's office! We enjoyed collecting the cheeky little monkeys along the way and working together.

We even found a (rather cold) monkey hiding with a clue in the staffroom freezer with the ice-packs!

Reunited at last! George was very grateful.

George must have been hungry, because when we came back after break he had eaten all of his banana! Fred was shocked it had gone so quickly.

Tagtastic rugby!

Y6 love Thursdays as they have two sessions of PE with two fantastic coaches!  At the moment they are developing their teamwork skills when playing small sided games and learning super techniques that they can employ in competitions in the future.

More Ancient Greece

As a final discovery with Durham University's outreach team, year 3 had the chance to design and create their own clay sculptures. These sculptures were used by the ancient Greeks when they had an illness or an injury. They would mould the clay or metal into the shape of their area of concern and then offer them up to the gods in the hope that they would be cured of their affliction.

Beebots- Part 2

Computing

This week we have continued our work on Bee-bots and algorithms with Mrs McMullen- we used the car mats to give our Bee- bots a set of instructions to follow a pre-planned route. We decided what our route would be, we wrote the algorithms on whiteboards, then off they went! It didn't matter if the Bee-bot didn't go exactly where we wanted it to, we knew that if it went the wrong way we simply needed to go back and adjust our algorithms, then we retested it!

A new addition!

Miss Winter- student teacher!

This week we met Miss Winter! Miss Winter is currently training to become a teacher! She has been brilliant at supporting us with our group work this week and we are looking forward to Miss Winter teaching us some lessons over the next few weeks :)!

Maths

Problem Solving- The Four Operations!

This week we have continued our work on problem solving by looking closely at different methods to find the answer to multiplication x, subtraction - and addition + number sentences!

On Friday, we worked in small groups and looked at these type of number sentences, we then used our own problem solving skills to decide how we would find the answer- first we decided which method we would use, then we decided which equipment we would need to help us solve it! Once we had done that, it was easy to find the answer!

For missing value addition number sentences we used the inverse- subtraction!
E.g. 23 + ? = 56
became
56 - 23 =

For missing value subtraction number sentences we still used subtraction but we rearranged the numbers!
E.g. 53 - ? = 39
became
53- 39 =

For multiplication we used arrays and repeated addition!

For division we used bead strings and repeated subtraction!

Literacy- Non- fiction- Recounts

A Day in the Life of Queen Victoria

This week we have looked closely at a recount of 'A Day in the Life of Queen Victoria'- linked to our topic work!

We have been discovering which features we should use to write an effective recount including- 'setting the scene', writing in 1st person and past tense, using WOW words such as adjectives, connectives, time connectives, verbs and adverbs!

We have enjoyed learning about a typical day in the life of a Queen! We know that it is important to add lots of detail in recounts to answer any questions that readers might have! We used the question hand to help us write some interesting questions for Queen Victoria! Then we role played in the style of Queen Victoria- we asked our questions and Queen Victoria replied!
