Growing beans - look what's sprouted!

Remember how we looked at some different types of beans a few weeks ago? When we looked at them last week, they had sprouted little shoots so we decided to plant one! Our other bean plant also just keeps on growing! We measured it with different objects, like cubes, paper clips and dice. It'll be time to re-pot it soon! Will it reach the clouds like the one in Jack and the Beanstalk?!

Year 2 Problem Solving

We have been loving using the laptops in our class this year, especially for Mathletics! Last week we used the computers to help us with our problem solving skills, something we have been focusing on in Maths! We used our calculation skills to think of all the different possibilities we could use to make £1 using only silver coins, to buy 'The doggy in the window'! We are becoming much more confident in our computing skills!

Maths Parent Workshop

There was an excellent turnout by parents for our recent Maths workshop run by Family Learning. A whole range of strategies to encourage quick recall of mental maths facts were explored along with ways in which to engage pupils further in the subject  through the use of games both within school and at home.

Jack and the Beanstalk Number Fun!

We are so good at using numbers! In our first week back after half term, we ordered bean numbers to 20 on a washing line, played a Jack and the Beanstalk board game, put beanstalk pictures in height order, counted beans to see how many filled a pot up to a line and played an adding game with magic beans and a shaker!

'You got 6 - here you go, you move here.'

'It's your turn now.'

'This one has 13 in.'

'This one has 9 and that one has more.'

What good teamwork!

Put 5 (or 10) beans into the cup and shake it. Every bean has one side that is gold (magic) and one side is white. They are called butter beans.

Then tip them out and count how many of them are 'magic' beans and how many are normal.
6 are magic and 4 are normal. There are 10 altogether. So 6 + 4 = 10.

Can you find any other ways of making 10?
What different ways can you find of making 5?

Rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 & 1000

In maths we began to explore rounding numbers and what this means. How do we know when to round up or down? What digits can give us a clue? We used a number line with the digits 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and colour co-ordinate them so we knew when to round up to the nearest 10 or down.

We then explored if we could apply this same rule to 100's and 1000's. What do you think we discovered? When should we round up or down?

Fun with Maths

We spent all week showing off how clever we are with using numbers! We hope Tinkerbell will appreciate all our super work!

Ordering the fish numbers

'Roll and Write' challenge. 'I've put the number roll I did next to the number of dots'

Which number box will you get? What is your score after two throws?

Class survey: 'I like to drink milk.'

How many skittles can you knock down?

Who's going to throw the biggest number?

Treasure hunt challenge in the sand. I wanted to sort the dubloons into their colours.

How many times will you press the beebot controls? Does it behave and go where you tell it to?

What direction will it go on the car mat?

We wrote number-lines to help Tinkerbell.

Captain Hook had stolen some of the numbers from these number tracks, so we fill them in again.

We counted how long it took friends to run round the race track.

What number skills can you show at home?

Numbers Numbers Everywhere!

Reception were shocked today to receive a letter from Tinkerbell saying that Captain Hook had stolen all the numbers in Neverland! So, we went on a number hunt round the school to see how many numbers we could find for Tinkerbell. We were shocked at how many numbers there are - they're everywhere!

What numbers can you find?

Topic- Railways

This week Year 1 and 2 joined together to enjoy a fun filled maths lesson all about Railways! We paired up with the Year 1 children to answer some questions based on a Railway theme, using the four operations- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division!

We answered a range of questions including 1 and 2 step problems, such as a train ticket costs £2. A passenger bought 5. how much did they pay altogether?

Short Division

This week Year 4 started a new method for division. We worked in teams to solve a range of division calculations using our knowledge of our new method.

Multipication and Division

This week we have been looking at multiplication and division again! We have been using lots of different methods such as bead- strings, cubes, repeated addition and subtraction and arrays to help us! We think its better to learn lots of different methods for the same types of calculation so that we can choose which one we find easiest!

We looked at missing value number sentences and division with remainders too! Year 2 are maths geniuses!
