KS2 Spelling Bee!

This week some children from Key Stage 2 attended a Spelling Bee competition at Bill Quay Primary School.

Unfortunately we didn't win, but we worked hard together as a team to complete the challenges we were set and managed to come second! Well done to Bill Quay who won the Spelling Bee, and to Wardly and Lingey House who came 3rd and 4th.

We had a fantastic afternoon and would like to thank Bill Quay Primary School for inviting us and being so welcoming (and for the delicious Bee cakes)!

Discussion Texts

In literacy we have been focusing on non-fiction writing. We have been thinking carefully about the issue of 'School Uniforms- good or bad?' we considered both sides of the argument and even debated the issues! We then wrote our discussion texts, making sure we included all of the main features including subtitles and bullet points! In the conclusion, we shared our own opinions! I was pleased to find that most Year 2s, having weighed up the advantages and disadvantages, believe that school uniform is a good idea!

Here is Chloe's fantastic final write up!

We are Jack and the Beanstalk Story-tellers

This week we have been doing lots of fun activities around Jack and the Beanstalk!

We have been independently writing letters to the Giant from Jack to say sorry for stealing his hen and harp.

We have enjoyed acting out the story in groups using stick puppets in the small world area, making any extra props that we decided we needed for the story.

We have pegged the pictures in order on our class washing line and then used the 'story chair' to become story-tellers and retell Jack and the Beanstalk.

We played a game with Mrs Curnow to match the correct parts of the sentences for the story and write them on leaves for our role play corner.

Literacy- Stories about fantasy worlds

This week Year 2 have continued their work on stories about fantasy worlds. We have been planning our settings and characters in preparation for writing our own stories last week! We have used our knowledge of settings and characters usually found in this genre, our story will be based on 'The Dream Giver'.

The work we've completed so far is looking fantastic, Miss Howe can't wait to read our finished stories next week :)!

Year 2 Literacy- The Dream Giver

This half term we are focusing on 'Stories with Fantasy Settings' in Literacy. We usually use traditional stories in our units of work and last year during this unit we looked at stories such as Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

However, this year we have focused our work on a modern animation 'The Dream Giver'! We had looked at this story previously through our SPaG lessons, and we loved it so much!

Here's the link if you'd like to watch it!

We wrote some questions for The Dream Giver this week, and then we got the chance to ask them through role- play! We did a great job! :)

At the end of our unit we will be writing stories about our own 'Dream Givers', I wonder which fantasy setting they will take us to and what we will find there!

Helping Hands

Year 5 have had the responsibility of helping out with Year 1 over this year. We have been helping them to set up for ICT lessons and Mathletics. Over the Spring term we also helped out in Year 1 when the children were completing their Easter cards.

Recently Year 1 have been sharing their favourite books with the children in Year 5.  The children had a great afternoon sharing their favourite parts of the story and having Year 5 read their favourite books to them.

Year 5 Spelling Bee!

Some of the children in Year 5 attended the Gateshead Schools Spelling Bee at the Dryden Centre. We were competing against lots of other schools in Gateshead to win the 2015 Spelling Bee trophy. Unfortunately we didn't win, but we worked so hard together as a team to complete the challenges we were set. We really had a great morning participating in the different spelling activities.
Miss Henry is super proud of all who attended and we were given a special message from Mrs Howe too, saying how fabulous we were and how proud she was.

News Reseach

We have been exploring a range of news website aimed at children. We discovered lots of interesting articles about animals, events from around the world and events happening in our country.

Year 5 Spelling Bee!

In Year 5 we are trying lots of new and fun strategies to help us to learn our spellings.
We are working so hard to improve our spelling to improve the quality of our writing.

Some of us have been lucky enough to be asked to attend the Gateshead Spelling Bee at the end of this month! We are hoping that in later months we will have our own Spelling Bee here at White Mere!
