Year 5: Spelling Bee!

Some of the children from Year 5 attended this years Gateshead Schools Spelling Bee at the Dryden Centre. We were competing against many other schools for the Spelling Bee 2015 trophy. Unfortunately we didn't win the trophy, but we had a great morning and really enjoyed participating in all of the fun spelling activities. After all, it's taking part that counts.
Miss Henry is so proud of us and we had a messages from Mrs Howe too about how fabulous we were!

RE

Today we started our new topic on Hinduism. We looked at the Aum symbol and some of the main Hindu beliefs.

Football Fever

A fever has been sweeping White Mere these past few weeks. Football fever! Children in KS2 have been valiantly representing our school in both girls and boys competitions.

Firstly we had the boys playoffs for the Lindisfarne League title. The boys played Wardley and St Albans last week to decide which of the three teams would be crowned champions. After a slow start to the season White Mere raced through the ranks to go joint top with the other two teams forcing the playoff situation. We won our first game against Wardley 2-0 but unfortunately we're pipped at the post by St Albans 4-1.

The boys did tremendously well and should be extremely proud of their postpition as runners up. Well done lads!

But it didn't stop there...

White Mere girls from Year 4 and year 5 competed in the 'Girls United' football tournament. Out of their 6 games played Team B managed 1 win and 1 draw and improved dramatically as the competition progressed. Team A managed to win 4 and draw 2 meaning they left the competition unbeaten! Very well done to all the girls! Come on round 2!

Bake sale news reaches the Chronicle!

Y6 were so excited to discover that news of their bake sale had reached the Evening Chronicle and was in the edition 26/3/15. It's great to share our fundraising activities with the wider community and the whole of the North East!

Easter bonnet competition.

Y6 have created some lovely Easter bonnets for our school competition - spring truly seems to have arrived along with much sunnier weather! (We hope it lasts)

Using adjectives to describe a setting.

During our literacy lessons we have been using simple adjectives to describe a haunted house. We have been using different forms of learning to help us understand adjectives.

Below is a picture of Olivia and Lewis working together to describe how they are feeling at the gates of the haunted house.

'We are William Morris' Apprentices'-Phoebe.

Last week we completed our William Morris paintings. William Morris was an artist who lived during the Victorian era whose work was admired by Queen Victoria. With their new found knowledge the children created their own pictures using colouring pencils and then turned them into paintings. I overheard some of the girls saying,'we are artists, we are really good at this.' It was great to hear the class having such a good time whilst they are learning.

Red Nose Day 2015

Thank you to everyone who dressed up daft and/or in red for this year's comic relief. We have raised a lot of money to help children living in Africa and the UK. Frazer was chosen as the daftest dressed person in Year 1.

Poorly tummies!

I was struck down by an awful tummy bug on Wednesday and I was so upset that I was missing our fantastic Queen Victoria workshop! Thankyou to all of the parents and carers who came to support their children, I can't wait to see all of the photos and fantastic creations on Monday Year 2! Well done!

Miss Howe :)

Victorian Measures

This week we have continued our measures unit in Maths, we completed a carousel of measures activities with a Victorian theme linked to Topic on Monday! Take a look...

Queen Victoria wanted her ladies in waiting to wear ribbons in their hairs for her ball! Only ribbons over 9cm would fit, so we used rulers to measure them and decide which ones were suitable!

George Stephenson needed an extra lump of coal to power his steam engine! He needed the coal to weigh 1kg or over, we used scales to select correct the lumps of coal for him!

Queen Victoria requested more of our delicious cheese straws, the baker needed at least 500g (1/2kg) of flour to make them! We used the balance to decide which bags of flour weighed 500g or more!

The Tanner needed more poop to treat his leather! He needed a container with a capacity of at least 1 litre (1000ml). We tallied how much the containers could hold, then selected the most suitable container!

The poor matchstick girl had no shoes! Her feet were very cold! We measured how much further she'd need to walk using a metre stick, we gave her the determination she needed to cross the road!

Plants

Over the last term we have been looking at Plants in Science. We have learned that plants are living things and how we know they are alive, what plants need to stay alive, and what happens when plants don't have these things!

We have already grown some bean plants in our class room and monitored how they've grown in different conditions! Next week we will be planting some 'Cress Heads'! Thankyou to parents and carers who have made this possible by sending in lots of tights! We will upload photos of our creations next week! Watch this space...

Comic Relief 2015

We had so much fun for comic relief! Year 2's outfits were all excellent and completely bonkers :)! We loved our fun run!! We laughed so much and raised a lot of money for a fantastic cause, thankyou to everybody who sponsored us and helped us with our outfits!

Mini Beast Measures

We conducted a mini beast hunt this week as part of our measures unit in Maths! We hunted for bugs around the school grounds and tallied how many we found of each type! We then used the result to create pictograms and bar charts. We discussed our findings with others and asked/ answered questions about them too! We loved searching for the little critters!
