Today we had our parent workshop in Year 5. We paired up with our parents / grandparents and some of our classmates to create a PowerPoint presentation all about an aspect of the Victorian era.
We demonstrated our fantastic ICT skills and even taught our parents and grandparents a thing or two!
A HUGE thank you to everyone who came! We really appreciate it!
Here you will find all of our latest news from across the school!

Story Maps
We know the sequence of Monkey Puzzle so well now, we can even draw story maps of the events in the story! We can then tell the story using our story map to help us!
You can do this for any story - Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, The Smartest Giant in Town, even your own story!
It helps with sequencing events in a story, and encourages fluency in being able to verbalise a story, leading to greater fluency for thinking and writing stories.
Why don't you try one yourself?
Animal Pictograms
Reception have done a pictogram to find out which jungle animal is our favourite. We had five animals to choose from. We cut out our chosen picture and added it to the right place on the pictogram.
Mrs Howe chose the tiger as her favourite. Which animal would you have chosen and why?
We were then able to answer lots of questions easily by looking at our chart. Can you see:
Which jungle animal was chosen the most?
Which animal was only chosen 3 times?
How many people chose the tiger and the monkey altogether?
How many more times was the crocodile chosen than the monkey?
Mrs Howe chose the tiger as her favourite. Which animal would you have chosen and why?
You could make your own pictogram for favourite colour power-ranger, favourite food, colour of cars you see out of your window, anything!
A Pandemonium of Parrots
We now have a 'company' or 'pandemonium' of parrots in our jungle corner! (No, I didn't know that was the collective noun for a group of parrots either!)
Finally, when everything is dry and cut out, assemble your 'feathers' to make a 'pretty polly'! Add googly eyes and a beak to finish.
They really are a funny bunch, and any resemblance to the penguin in Wallace and Gromit with a rubber glove on his head is purely accidental! All made by us!
First, choose which colour of card you would like and draw round your foot onto it. (This is harder than it looks!) This will be the body.
Then, do some colourful hand-painting (about 7 should be plenty). Remember to roll your sleeves up, wear an apron and not touch anything until you are clean again!
Note: Some children will thoroughly enjoy getting stuck in!

Don't you think they look fantastic?!

Cheese Straws!
On Wednesday we received a letter from the baker asking us to make some cheese straws for Queen Victoria! We know that cheese straws were a very popular dish in Victorian times! We set to it and followed the written instructions to bake some delicious cheesy straws! Here are the steps we followed if you would like to make some at home!
You will need:
120g butter, softened
450g grated cheddar cheese
250g plain flour
1 teaspoon of salt
Step 1- First, wash your hands thoroughly
Step 2- Mix the cheese and butter together gently
Step 3- Add in the flour and salt, mix carefully with your hands
Step 4- When the dough is stretchy (but not sticky), roll out the cheese straws on a floured board then chop in to smaller pieces!
Step 5- Place the cheese straws on to a greased baking tray
Step 6- Bake the cheese straws in a preheated oven at 190 degrees for 10-12 minutes
Step 7- Place your cheese straws on a wire rack to cool down. Once they are cool enough, enjoy!
On Thursday we filled in the missing instructions to make cheese straws, we are pros!

Origami hearts!
On Tuesday we followed a set of instructions to make Origami hearts! Our idea was inspired by 'Victorian puzzle purses' (we are studying the Victorians as our topic!) and with Valentine's day fast approaching we though it was a great creation!
We went to the listening station, one partner at a time, and read/ listened/ watched the next step, then we went back to the class and retold the instruction to our partners- they listened and carried out the instruction carefully, until eventually our creations were completed! Take a look!
Freddy thought our Valentine's hearts were fantastic!

Vile Victorian board games.
To truly test their knowledge of the creative curriculum topic the " Vile Victorians" y6 have set about designing and making their own board games. We have been so impressed by their efforts and imaginative response to this challenge! Check out their ideas - which would you enjoy playing the most ?
Street child freeze frames!
Y6 have recently been studying Berlie Doherty's "Streetchild" as part of their narrative English unit. They really enjoyed recreating specific scenes from the book along with being in the hot seat as key characters.

Ordering numbers
This week we have completed some work on place value and ordering numbers! We played a great game with our partners, firstly we chose 3 digit cards, then we made as many 2 digit numbers as we could using the same numbers! Once we'd done that we ordered the numbers from smallest to largest!

Golden Book Award
A huge well done to Mollie Willis the winner of our Golden Award this week! She produced a fantastic recount about 'A Day in the Life of Queen Victoria'. She used her checklist carefully to ensure she had included all of the features to make a perfect recount!
The rest of the class did an amazing job too! It was a tough call! Well done Year 2!
We hope you enjoy your weekend with Freddy Mollie!
