Egyptian Collages

Y5 and Y6 were amazed to learn about the range of artefacts that Howard Carter found within the tomb of Tutankhamun. They were set the challenge of creating a collage using a range of mixed media to represent one of the artefacts discovered. We hope you agree the collages are also a sight to behold!

Computing

Y6 have recently begun Computing lessons, delivered by Miss McMullen, a specialist ICT teacher from Heworth Grange Secondary School. They have learnt all about algorithms and the importance of using precise vocabulary when programming. This proved to be essential when Y6 had to use their navigational skills in order to move around the school building!

"Back to the Iron Age" Discovering the past with Durham university.

On Monday 14th October children from year 3 and 4 were treated to a spectacular day of Iron Age themed activities. Ross and Daniel from Durham University's outreach program showed the children some genuine Iron Age artefacts which we all held and examined. We examined the cast of a real Celtic skeleton and constructed the bones in the correct order (hopefully!). It was a brilliant day!

Making embossed coins with our own designs...

Learning about pre-history...

Dressing as the Celtic peoples would have dressed...

Discovering our British and European History from every angle!

Year 3 and 4 visit Seven Stories

Reading and acting at Seven Stories

This week Year 3 travelled the Ouseburn valley to the magical Seven Stories. Here we were shown around by Bryony and Taylor who told us some fabulous traditional tales that all had a modern twist. We talked about our favourite authors and the books we had been reading and acted out in some super role play and freeze frames (even Mr Noble got involved!) . Finally at the end if the day we entered their museum where they keep original artwork from some of our favourite classic Disney films.

Take a look...

The end of year Carnival ( Year 2 )

Roll up! Roll up! It's time to... SPONGE MR NOBLE!

Year 2 show off their knowledge of money by working the stalls perfectly.

We sold comics, book marks, cakes and of course gave every child a chance to wipe the smile of Mr Nobles face by walloping it with a wet sponge!

Science ( Year 2 )

A huge discovery of pictures from last year!
Electric Science.

Here we investigated how we can create a static charge using friction. Hayley had rubbed the balloon on her head and the charge was detected by the light movement of the tinfoil inside the home made static detector.

We also examined how the electric charge can effect the surroundings. Here the charge attracted the sugar on the card and it shot up throught the air and clung to the balloon!

Why is this happening?

Circuits

We used our knowledge of electricity to build a complete circuit!

Electricity

We have been investigating electrical insulators and electrical conductors. We created a human electrical conductor and our human flow of electricity could flow through the material. However our human electrical insulator did not allow our human flow of electricity through.

Iron Age Discovery with Durham University

This's week year 3 and 4 took part in an Iron Age workshop. We investigated a range of real artefacts from the Iron Age and discussed what we have found out about Celtic life from these objects.

We then took part in an art workshop were we developed our understanding of the roundhouse structure and the design of coins from the Iron Age.

We developed our understanding of the role of an archeologist and how bones can tell us a lot about how a person lived and died. We then became bone detectives to piece together our very own skeleton.

How to construct dialogue

We used recorders to understand the different sounds our voices make. Some of us have different voices to others so we tried using adverts to describe how we spoke in different ways. It was a great morning and we even got to make some funny voices to describe. Mr Noble has the loudest voice!

Year 2 Castle Topic

Year 2 had a great time using their skills of design and their knowledge of the structure of a Castle to build these fabulous models! Well Done!

Topic- Autumn 2

We got such a surprise this morning when we came in to school! We found there had been an intruder in our classroom. We decided quickly that it was no ordinary intruder, we found a trail of sparkly glitter leading in to the classroom from our door, a frozen hand in our block area and icicles hanging from our ceiling! On the window we found a message and blue slim handprints from our visitor! Here is what it said...

We got our evidence bags out and quickly investigated the scene of the crime! Eventually we came to the conclusion that our visitor was none other than... JACK FROST!

And oh what a mess he made!!

Literacy- Autumn 2

In Literacy this half term, we have been learning about instructions! We now know that instructions tell somebody "what to do" and that "bossy words" (verbs) must be used!

We found out that The Big Bad Wolf (from Little Red Riding Hood) had began to feel a little guilty about his encounter with Granny! So firstly we decided to help Mr Wolf bake some cakes for Granny, we followed the instructions, paying particular attention to the bossy words, to make some cupcakes! Next we gave Mr Wolf some instructions on how to be polite e.g. Knock on the door gently and Smile sweetly.
Finally we gave Mr Wolf some directions about how to get back to Granny's house (we even drew our own maps!)

We hope that Granny liked our cakes and that Mr Wolf remembered to be polite this time!

Our Trip to Beamish!

Last week we visited Beamish with Year 2 to learn more about our 'Toys' topic! We had a fantastic time here are some pictures to show what we got up to!

We were greeted by Beamish's toy specialist!

She showed us lots of her special toys!

Then we got to play with some of them ourselves, we had lots of fun!

Then we even got to make our own thaumatropes (spinning pictures) with some help!

And we made a new friend- Meet Molly the pig!
